Experiments with genetically engineered mice suggest mutations in critical genetic material, rather than cell damage caused by free radicals, now seem the most likely cause of ageing.
According to researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the ageing process is caused, at least in part, by accumulated mutations in the genetic material of mitochondria, the minute organelles known colloquially as the “powerhouse of the cell” and which are responsible for providing living creatures with energy.
The researchers, led by Tomas Prolla, suggest this finding could lead to ways of staving off old age through drugs that could protect the genetic material against factors that cause mutation - toxic chemicals, radiation and suchlike. www.eurekalert.org
